On August 3rd, 2001, ahead of schedule, KNX's new DX-50 arrived at the transmitter site.  On the left is the main cabinet, still wrapped in plastic.

On the right, the cabinet housing RF output and tuning is being eased into the building.  This crew proved to be very skillful at maneuvering these heavy cabinets through limited spaces.  And, since installing new equipment requires more care than does demolition such as that which you saw in previous pages, we were happy to see the apparent skill of this moving crew.

Movers just about have the first cabinet in place.  We can see the 4 cooling fans that will direct air from this cabinet into the next cabinet where the high-tech electronics and power transformer reside.

Looking at the back of this cabinet, we see the RF output section, and the back view of the cooling fans.  The doors to this cabinet, once installed, will house air intake filters.

The final cabinet, heaviest at near 2900 lbs, waits outside.  We climbed the ladder to take careful measurements and to be sure that we were going to be able to fit it through the door.  We had thought that we'd need to remove a "combiner" bar on the top of the transmitter to give us 3 more inches of clearance.  But, when the movers discovered we had a whole 1 3/4 inches to spare, they assured us that this was more than enough room to work with.  They proved themselves right.

It's a heavy duty diesel fork lift.  I've always enjoyed the smell of diesel (which explains my state of mind), so I linger outside to watch the experts at work.  I was impressed.  So much weight and size, yet they finessed the equipment through the transmitter building door with the apparent skill, measured caution, and coordination of a real first class team.

Years of experience and the right equipment get this moving job done safely.  As they promised,  1 3/4 inches of clearance at the top of this heavy, power transformer laden cabinet was plenty of space.

Once inside we see the crew rotating the cabinet for placement next to the first one, where both are leveled and bolted together.  Next time you move, hire skilled professionals.  It's the only way to go.

OK, let's compare technology.   On the left, an install from 1964.  On the right, today's DX-50 has the same 50,000 signal, uses nearly 27% less utility power, and is smaller.

The next step in our DX-50 project will be connections for power, control systems, and antenna "hard line" installation.  After all of this work, we need a break.  So, let's go to the next page...(Click)
