The Birds of KBLA 1580
Los Angeles, CA
(As noted in the CGC Communicator, #613, February 3, 2004)
Photos and Text by Marvin Collins

These photos show birds at KBLA enjoying the guy wires while feasting in the field between the towers.  This is representative of what I have seen during the 49 years that I have worked around broadcast transmitter facilities.  Although I read concerns about birds crashing into towers and being killed, I have yet to see this.  While I have seen birds killed while trying to fly through the glass windows of my house,  I have never seen one have a collision with a tower.   To the contrary,  the birds seem to like the tower and guy cables as a place to rest and enjoy the view while looking for food.
